3 Primary Types Of Paint Sprayers

If you need to purchase a paint sprayer for a commercial application for your business, you still need to know what type of sprayer you want to purchase. The three primary types of commercial paint sprayers are compressed air sprayers, high volume low pressure sprayers, and airless paint sprayers.

Compressed Air Sprayers

A compressed air sprayer is the type of paint sprayer that most people think of when they think about a paint sprayer. Compressed air sprayers are also known as high-pressure sprayers.

The paint sprayer is connected to a compressed air tank. The compressed air is really strong and will help push out the paint. With a compressed air sprayer, the paint comes out really fast and quick. The spray is usually wide and comes out as a mist. This is great for painting something large, but not great for painting something that requires detailed work.

Additionally, compressed air sprayers tend to be really loud, so you'll need to have ear protection on to use this.

High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) Sprayers

High volume low pressure sprayers, more commonly known as HVLP, are very popular sprayers. In comparison to a compressed air sprayer, the spray is a lot tighter and focused. This allows one to use the sprayer for more detailed work that requires a little more finesse.

The low pressure aspect means that the paint doesn't come out in a fine spray like it does with a compressed air sprayer; instead the paint comes out with more volume, resulting in a thicker application and cover.

HVLP sprayers work well with both oil and latex paint, in addition to varnish and liquors. HVLP systems tend to be more user friendly as well.

Airless Paint Sprayers

Airless paint sprayers are generally small and are used for home projects. It doesn't add air into the paint mixture. It allows for a more controlled spray with the nozzle, although it can hold a lot less paint than the two sprayers discussed above. It is best for smaller at-home jobs.

For industrial applications, a compressed air sprayer or a high volume low pressure sprayer is best. A compressed air sprayer will provide a fine spray and cover large areas quickly. An HVLP sprayer is better for more detailed work and when a thicker layer of paint is needed. The type of sprayer that you need for your business depends on the type of painting that you need to accomplish. Your business may even benefit from having both types of sprayers, as they have different applications and benefits.
